Cricket Tournament!
Last week Mrs Jackson and Mr Charlton attended a friendly cricket match between Bearwood Primary and South Lake school. Bearwood were very successful!
District Sports!
We had one of the most successful entries into District Sports ever! Francesca came 3rd in the U9 girls sprint, Fletcher came 3rd in the boys high jump competition, and all of our relay teams qualified for the finals!
The day started very warm but ended very wet and we were unable to complete the finals for the relays. This meant that all our teams who qualified could not compete in the final. It was a great day, we will be building on the successes we had next year.
Sports Day 2023!
Larch won sports day and therefore the sport cup for this year. Sonar and Toby were overjoyed to represent their house as house captains and lift the cup. Also pictured the winners of the 5/6 high jump competition which took place in the afternoon.
Football - Bearwood V Farley Hill!
Another great game for our team. The boys worked hard and played on an unfamiliar surface at the 3G pitch at Farley Hill. We came away with a 3-1 loss but are still feeling positive about our final match on Friday 14 at Bearwood. Another great goal from Kirk was a great relief in the second half. We were all treated to ice lollies after the match by the generous staff at Farley Hill. Already looking forward to the rematch.
Football Match Winners!
This week, our football team went to Gorse Ride to play in a friendly football match. The game was very competitive and the boys started out slowly, conceding a goal in the first quarter. However, Mr Bourke gave some good coaching and really inspired the boys to work together. In the end, the boys pulled it back and came away with a great 2-1 win. 2 super goals from Kirk were well deserved and Elliott was a fantastic keeper, preventing lots of attempts on goal from the other team. Mr Bourke and myself are looking forward to the next friendly match next week, hopefully we can make it 2 victories in a row.
Quad Kids Event!
Last week, we took some of our UKS2 athletes to compete in the Quad Kids event at Palmer Park. It was a great afternoon of athletics and our children put in a fantastic effort. Several of our athletes won their heats and we all had a great afternoon in the sun! District Sports here we come!

We are so incredibly proud of Summer-Rose (Y4) in Red Squirrel class who delivered an assembly on Wednesday to all of the children in KS1 and KS2 about her role as a Dining Hall Prefect. She really showcased this half term's value of 'courage' when she bravely stood up and presented to her audience. The children thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done Summer-Rose!
Eco Garden!
The eco-warriors have been hard at work preparing our raised beds for our sunflower competition. This week they did some weeding so that we can plant our coronation wildflower seeds. Our strawberry patch is looking promising again, with lots of berries forming.
Multi-Sports Events!
Some of our KS1 pupils participated in the Wokingham Schools Multi-sports Event yesterday, they did a fantastic job of representing the school and tried their best with all of the activities. We had a really fun afternoon! Thank you to all of the parents who came to support.
Thousands upon thousands of children across the nation sang the song 'Defender Of Us All' for King Charles III along with Bearwood Primary School.
We sang it as a school before our celebratory lunch last Friday and the children did a fantastic job!
Here is a link to a BBC clip if you would like to find out more about the song -
Jasgeet in Year 5 gave a very informative and professional presentation on Vaisakhi.
STEM poster winners entered into the British Science Association Competition!
Two weeks ago, Bearwood Primary School celebrated British Science Week and children were asked to create a poster all about STEM and this year's theme of: 'Connections.' The posters we received were fantastic and it was incredibly hard to choose only five to be entered into the nationwide competition led by the British Science Association.
A huge well done goes to the winners of the 'Infant' (5-8 yrs) category:
Izyan Abbas and Olivia Holland
And the winners of the 'Junior' (8-11) category:
Aditya Kumar, Simar Bhutani & Chloe Humphrey (a paired entry) and Mihika Sharma
You created wonderful, interactive posters and we wish the best of luck in the competition!

We had a full tour of the facility, including the changing rooms, hydrotherapy pool, gym and physio rooms. We finished the afternoon with some training and a mini-match with one of the Reading coaches. It was an invaluable experience and one we hope we can repeat again in the future.
Science Week!
This week Bearwood celebrated British Science Week and the children had a wonderful time. They created posters for a competition, watched live events hosted by Science Farm Live and completed exciting science-based activities in their classrooms. We were also very fortunate to have some of our parents come in and to talk to the children to share their role in STEM and inspire us all. A huge thank you to Mr Juna, Miss Brandt, Mrs Lyness-Lamprey and Mrs Rizvi who all took part, we are extremely thankful. Miss Parry will be announcing a KS1, LKS2 and UKS2 winner of the poster competition very soon and those successful will be entered into a national competition led by the British Science Association, good luck to everyone!
WASMA Production!
A huge congratulations and well done to our fabulous children who performed at WASMA on Sunday. For many, this was their first experience of performing on such a large scale. As you can imagine, it can be quite overwhelming! But the choir have been so dedicated, taking part in a weekly lunchtime rehearsal at school and the two mass rehearsals. The children were buzzing with excitement on Sunday and it was such a privilege to share the experience with them. A huge thank you to Mrs Haden and Mrs Shaw for organising the event.
RISC Workshop!
We had Kirsty from the RISC (Reading International Solidarity Centre) who came in and delivered a workshop for our UKS2 children around Fairtrade. This was a lovely opportunity for our children to demonstrate their understanding of this topic. The children loved the hands-on tasks- you can clearly see from their faces they all enjoyed showing off their Fairtrade understanding.
Hockey Tournament!
On Thursday afternoon, Mr Bell took a beginner hockey team to take part in the School Games In2Hockey competition at Reading Hockey Club. The children played fantastically well, they quickly gelled together and worked so intuitively together. We managed to place 3rd in our tournament which is a fantastic result. Mr Bell is eager to run a hockey training club/team in September for UKS2.
Eco-Warrior Assembly!
Well done to our Eco-Warriors who delivered fantastic assemblies to the KS1 and KS2 children on Wednesday. They gave us an insight into what their role as an Eco-Warrior means for our school and how important it is for all of us to look after our planet. They provided us with an interactive video and involved the audience with a quiz. Well done to Alex (Y6), Aiyana and Chinelo (Y5), Milo, Brooke and Skylar (Y4), Omreyansh (Y3) and Advik and Chioma (Y2).

Netball Tournament Winners!
This week, Mr Bell and Mrs Fenton took our first netball team to Dolphin school to take part in a netball tournament. The children have been training multiple times a week, both after school with Mr Bell and during lunchtimes with TJ the sports coach. The children played really well - they won every match they played and were victorious in the tournament overall. Fletcher was our player of the tournament, scoring 20 goals! On Wednesday, our Healthy Schools Ambassadors (Nikunj Y6, Eliana Y4 and Somto Y3) led the KS1 and KS2 assemblies in the hall to promote healthy eating at our school and why it is so important for us all. They discussed the benefits of eating healthy foods and reminded us all to eat a fresh fruit or vegetable at playtimes. The classes were engaged throughout and thoroughly enjoyed the 'What am I?' guessing game at the end. A huge well done to our ambassadors!
The eco-warriors are back at work weeding our raised beds. Currently we have savoy cabbage, purple broccoli and Brussel sprouts growing.
Rock Steady Workshop!
The children thoroughly enjoyed participating in a workshop led by Rock Steady this week. There was sheer delight on their faces as they clapped and joined in with familiar songs performed by Jamie. Some children even got to demonstrate playing the instruments themselves. The drums were a big hit! Rock Steady are supporting Bearwood in raising the profile of music by giving children the opportunity to enhance their musical talents and find their inner rhythm.
If you would like any more information, please contact Rock Steady themselves or Mrs Haden as Music Lead.
Netball Competition!
This week, our Y6 girls netball team attended a tournament at Westende Primary School with Miss Davis and Mrs Mackenzie. The children were competitive and worked really well as a team, considering this was their first competition. It was great to see such positive attitudes from our girls - they made us very proud. We very much look forward to being able to compete again.
Eco Garden Update! October 2022
Key Stage 1 flexed their muscles last term to harvest some huge carrots from the vegetable patch. It was mucky but very exciting work! Next we will dig up some potatoes.
We have really enjoyed watching our pumpkin grow – thank you to the Johnstone family for providing us with the plant. We harvested a whopper pumpkin and carved it with the Bearwood logo for Halloween. Now the eco warriors are hard at work weeding the vegetable patch, ready to sow some new crops.
Thank you to Mr Shacklady and Mrs Mackenzie and our Parent helpers who helped create our vegetable patch! We can't wait to see what grows!
Reception enjoyed playing in the sunshine, by playing with bubbles and painting with water.
We raised a whopping £322.87! Thank you to everyone who took part.
