Welcome to the Governors page of the Bearwood Primary School Website. Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit more about us.

As Governors, we work in partnership with the school to deliver a clear vision, ethos and strategy that enables all the pupils of Bearwood Primary School to achieve their full potential.

We do not run the school; that is a job that is already being done very well by Mrs Jane Barlow and her Senior Leadership team. As Governors we monitor and review the educational performance of the school, the Head Teacher, pupils and staff. We provide support, challenge and encouragement to achieve high educational standards. One of our key duties is to promote high standards of educational attainment. We also oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure it's money is well spent. We work closely with Mrs Barlow and her Senior Leadership Team, to fulfil the school statutory obligations. Where applicable, we monitor and challenge the leadership team to do even better for your children.
We also have a say in appointing new staff, including the Head Teacher.

The governor types are split into:
• Local Authority Governors
• Staff Governors
• Parent Governors
• Co-opted Governors

Some governors also have special duties such as Special Education Needs, facilities, and safeguarding. We train during the year to keep our skills sharp and to help the school do better with Ofsted inspections and with improving the children’s desire to learn.

We meet regularly and have several sub-committees that feed into our Full Governing Body Meetings. The core committees are:
• Resource
• Pay and performance management
• PPC

Outside of all the statutory bits and pieces of our roles, we are also human beings like yourselves and care as much about the school, the children and the community as each of you do also.
We can very often be seen on the playground, and regularly get involved in the education process by carrying out learning walks amongst the children classrooms so as to really get integrated into the daily school activities. On the back of these, we often make recommendations and feedback to the teachers about our findings, which can includes the effective use of our different schooling methods e.g. growth mind-set. It is widely accepted that it is sometimes useful to have an outside eye look at what teachers are doing and challenge them to assure that the most positive outcome is achieved.

Just as importantly, we do also try to make ourselves as available as possible to the rest of the parent and carers of the Bearwood family and to answer any questions you may have, or just to say hello!

If you feel that you would like to help our school and have a rewarding experience by becoming a Governor then please do watch out for the notifications for when we next look to enrol further parent governors.

School Governors

Chair of Governors and Local Authority Governor

Karen Butroid

I am the Chair of the Full Governing Body and the Chair of the Pay and Performance Management Committee and attend all meetings.  I am the Assessment Governor and have oversight of the use of the Pupil Premium Grant.

I have been a governor at the school since July 2013 after being appointed as a Local Authority Governor.  Being involved in the Resources Committee and looking at Assessment, enables me to put my finance and mathematical background to use. I am an Actuary by profession and work for a consultancy, advising several clients.  At work I also have some responsibility for professional standards and quality audits.

Other interests focus around my teenage children, walking, gardening and keeping fit.

Co-Opted Governors

Rachelle Shepherd DuBey

I am a Borough and Parish Councillor and I was keen to be a governor at a school in my ward. I wanted to use my MAEd degree in Science Education to help my community. Before becoming a governor at Bearwood I was involved in a parent consultation on school places in Winnersh. This resulted in the new Wheatfield school and the decision not to go forward with the Hatch Farm Dairies School.

I have been a governor since March 2014. My professional background is Counselling and Psychotherapy. As a Councillor I mainly cover planning, transport and health.

My  interests are computers, politics and my dog, my cats and healthy exercise.

Sheila Peffers-Moore

I was recently appointed a co-opted governor after applying to be a parent governor and proudly accepted. My primary role is being a mum. I have three children at Bearwood. I am passionate about education. I am a school reader helper. We love the local school and believe in supporting the whole Bearwood family. Being a governor allows me, with others, to help map the future.

I am a retired senior manager, trainer / co-ordinator and a qualified counsellor. I have worked at ChildLine, ARC (Wokingham) and other counselling bodies supporting people.

My interests include: the outdoors, swimming, walking, clubbercise, and running. I belong to a choir which recently featured at The Hexagon.

Claire Sanderson

I have two children at Bearwood Primary School and l joined the Governing Body in 2016.

I am a qualified Chartered Accountant and work as a Finance Business Partner in the Telecoms industry and I am looking to use my financial and analytical skills to help support the school in the Resource and Pupil Progress Committees.

I volunteered to be a governor because I wanted to contribute to the further development of the school. I am passionate about achieving the best possible school experience for our children, to give them the best possible foundation for a happy life ahead and to encourage them to enjoy learning.

Parent Governors

Nicola Bruce

I am very proud to have been recently elected as a parent governor and pleased to have the opportunity to be involved in creating the future at Bearwood Primary School.

I've enjoyed getting to know so many of the parents in the playground, since my children joined Bearwood in 2013 and I look forward to meeting more over the next five years.

As well as being a Mum, I also enjoy a challenging career at National Grid and my work life balance is very important to me. I have a degree in electrical engineering and enjoy being able to share my passion for this with the children at school events, such as Science Day.

I am the Health & Safety Governor, a member of the Resource committee and a member of the Travel Working Group.

I look forward to supporting the school on a continuous journey of improvement.

Danny Chinery

I volunteered to become a parent governor as I was interested in taking an active involvement in the schools’ development. I have a four-year term that ends in July 2018 and I find it very enjoyable and rewarding.

We meet regularly on various topics and each of the governors have a key role in helping the school to develop in line with expectations. I have two children myself at the school and they both thrive. I personally think the main reason for this is the environment which I believe to be excellent.

Out of school, I work in IT which I also very much enjoy as it’s an ever changing environment and never gets dull.

Melissa Smith

I am a parent governor, a member of the Pupil Progress Committee and the governor with oversight of SEN.

I have been a parent governor at the school since the end of October 2016.  I have triplet sons who joined Reception in 2016.  Outside of my governor role I volunteer for a local charity, First Days.

Previously to having my children I was a Civil Servant.  In my career I dealt with many different situations and people from all backgrounds.  I have also liaised with multiple agencies in the local area.   I volunteered to become a school governor because I would like to help the school and its pupils in any way I can to ensure that the children can look forward to successful futures.
